PaintingDb™ is one of the fastest growing virtual art galleries in the web. Our database of paintings currently consists of about 7.000 images and is growing rapidly. The focus of the database has been to keep the image quality high and the data always up to date. Another main goal is to keep the user interface as simple and light as possible. We don’t want unnecessary graphics, ads or unimportant data to be taking space from the main thing - art itself.

Technology

We try to differ from other virtual galleries by taking full advantage of few modern applications - Google Maps and Cooliris. Google maps provides direct map links for every painting that’s listed under a known museum or a church. When taken a bit further our aim is to create a tool where a user could get directions to his/her favorite paintings from PaintingDb™ using a mobile device like iPhone for example. Cooliris on the other hand gives you a totally unique way of viewing the contents of PaintingDb™. Try them out and feel the difference they make!

There are multiple development projects going on right now and we wish patience from our users until everything has passed the so called "beta"-stage. However we wish you're able to enjoy what we offer so far! There are thousands of images waiting to be examined already and don't forget to test our art quiz too.

How PaintingDb™ started

PaintingDb™ was founded by IT Consultant and Contractor Jussi Pyysalo. Mr. Pyysalo studies art history in the Turku University as a hobby and the project first started as his personal database for the paintings presented during the lessons and in the literature. As the database grew and some tools started to evolve around it Mr. Pyysalo decided to publish the project in the web under the name PaintingDb™.
